I can't believe I haven't ranted, eer,
explained how most people eat here. Normally it is 2 meals of BREAD per day. This means slices of bread, spread with butter, fake butter, cream cheese (you get the idea) then with meat, cheese, jam, sprinkles, you-name-it. I admit sometimes it can be delicious, but eating it that many times in a week is sooooooooooo boring and not good for someone who is sure she is carb-intolerant.

My other issue is that often this is for the evening meal and in the afternoon they eat 'warm' or 'salty' if they are home. I am used to expecting and enjoying a nice meal after you have worked all day...a sandwich just doesn't cut it.

*strange fact* In Dutch they call a "roll/bun" a
sandwich and what I would call a "sandwich" is called a
boterham
Since I am not a fan of this eating style, I eat how I am used to and my husband eats bread for lunch...maybe in the future I will be forced to change, but right now I am happy with it this way. The advantage is that I enjoy eating bread at other peoples' houses (which is like only once or twice a month).
I just found this link and I was laughing, saaaaad that it is sooo true! Especially the part about having only 1 thing on the bread! I get in trouble for that still! So I have found a way to modify...I take 2 pieces of bread, one with ham, one with cheese and eat them together (so in the end I still win =P)
I only like bread like that in the mornings... with coffee or hot chocolate -mainly hot chocolate since the coffee is not good for baby. I couldn't eat it all day though. :)
ReplyDeleteHa! Funny post. I agree it's quite different then here. I think with the Eijbersen's it was more because Ma worked and the kids could get cheap hot meals in the schools. So it was easy to have bread in the evenings. I never could get used to it either and do the sandwich thing for lunch and a hot meal in the evenings.
ReplyDeleteYes, maybe too much bread but I had to admit that I miss the really good bread from Belgium!
ReplyDeleteThe bread is really good over here but they're not as adamant about bread for dinner in Germany. The big meal is still lunch, though. In the evening people will eat leftovers if they're hungry or make a sandwich. They are very picky about what you put on one, though. I once dared to put ham AND cheese on mine. You would have thought I was some kind of barbarian with the looks I got. haha.
ReplyDeleteBut being home at lunchtime everyday I just make myself a sandwich or a bowl of soup since I'm not going to make a huge meal just for myself. When my husband gets home we usually cook something together. This works for us. :)
I love bread but I don't think I could do that for every meal. It's actually healthier to have a big lunch and a smaller dinner. It's better for the digestion to eat a smaller amount later in the day. But I'm used to the hot yummy dinner.
