(2 minute walk from my house above)
In my hours of cleaning, I have time to think alot! I do alot of thinking of my time here and if I am fitting in, what I like here, what I don't like, what I want in the future and the list goes on. I want everyone I know to come here so they can at least see and experience what I do on a daily basis. I came up with an idea of doing a 'series' of little things that *I* find 'typical Belgian.' If any true Belgians read this and beg to differ, go for it, but this is my view on it and how I would share it.
To start out of why I am a GOOD Belgian, I LOVE frieten (fries). I had no clue how popular they are here. First there are Frietkotten/Frituurs everywhere. These are mostly sketchy-looking little places that smell of grease and are open at strange hours. Here you can buy fries with several options of toppings or other strange meat products (ok, I admit I am not super adventurous when it comes to meat). I adore fries with vleessaus (meat sauce) and mayo. I know many people just said, "Nasy!" But don't knock it till you try it. Anyone like Canadian Poutine? I think people eat fries from one of these places probably once ever 2 weeks or more (I've had it every week since returning).
In addition to the little fry shops, fries are served in 'fine dining,' which was also a surprise for me. I am used to fries being 'lower class.' Of course being the refined country it is, you must eat them with a knife n fork (grrr).

The fries and your variety for dippers looks quite tasty! What kind of drink is that?!
ReplyDeleteIt would take a lot longer to eat fries with a knife and fork! :) We're used to grabbing several at a time with our fingers! ;)
I like eating fries with a knife and fork! And it's the Frnech-Cnadians that destroy perfectly good fries with poutine, not all of us :P
ReplyDeleteI love poutine. I will try the fries when I come visit you. :) I like this idea. You should do a video of your daily life. Video walking to the bus, etc. :)
ReplyDeleteI was introduced to fries and mayo in Holland last year. I now prefer that over fries with ketchup! lol. Too bad it's waaay more fattening. Boo. :(
