I'm not a good Belgian-Beds

I think it's the seemingly little things that are a big deal to me...getting used to the system of beds/bedding was/is hard for me. The first thing was the sizing, but now I have that down...no more twin, double, king, queen.

The second thing is that there are no boxsprings here. I had never thought of anything else. I was surprised when I saw this: It is called a lattenbodem ( I have no clue what it is in English). These are obviously to support the mattresses. The photo is of a fancier electric one.

The third thing I found strange was that many couples have separate mattresses! We even have that! At first I was against it, but I found out only after we bought our bed frame that we had to because of the size. And with this you can either have separate bottom sheets or a big one over the 2 (which I like).

The fourth and last adjustment was the bedding. I am used to a top sheet, a blanket (or 3) and then a comforter or duvet. Ok, I know that is a lot, but I like lots of bedding. Here it is normal to have JUST a duvet. NO top sheet. This was the hardest for me. I love my sheets! So I brought over a top sheet for us. I am the only one I know in Europe with this :P For the people who don't like top sheets, this continent is the place to come. I should check how it is in other continents. I am aware that some in North America do it the same way as here...

I know I said that was the last adjustment...but this I think is interesting. The mindset around the duvet is also different. For me when decorating a room, you make sure the bedset matches the room or even match the room to the bedset. Here they have several for a room and it doesn't matter so much if it matches. AND many couples have separate duvets, but we have 1 big one. (Our bed when we moved in...now the room looks a bit different)

  1. My husband's family (German by descent) also only use a bottom sheet and a duvet. I came from a family that used a full set of sheets, blankets, and a comforter (or duvet), just like you. It was an adjustment when we got married. Our compromise was we use a top sheet and a duvet, no extra blankets. This seems to work well for us :). No one else in the family uses one :D.

  2. No top sheet for us! I find they just get wrapped around my feet and I can't move. We use a comforter with covers so I can wash it easily and color change. :-)

  3. This annoys me, too lol. We have a single matress (I guess it's not queen sized but whatever that equivilient would be!) and two duvets. I'd prefer just one. Making the bed is easier, though. Just fold the duvet in half and put it at the end of the bed haha

    The American way is prettier.

  4. The duvet is usually mostly for decoration, not so much for keeping you warm. The sheet is used to protect the comforter and/or duvet from getting sweat on it while you sleep because you normally do sweat while sleeping. That way you don't have to wash it as often. I love tons of blankets!

  5. I can't sleep without a top sheet, so even if I lived in Europe, I would use one too! Curt never used a top sheet until he married me either. Must be the German/Austrian influence there as well.
