I realized it has been a while since I posted a special 'Belgium' post. My aunt has recently started a blog about her adventures in England and it has reinspired me.
Someone asked me yesterday if grocery stores are different here. Yes, Yes, Yes! Ok, so perhaps the difference isn't as big as I make it out to be, but there are some noticeable differences.
1. Most are much smaller. There is something like a Costco, but I rarely go. We don't really need the bulk sizes yet and I don't have space to store extra.
2. All do not have the same things. My favorite is the cheapest, but it is the cheapest because it does not carry name brands or special products. So if I want peanut butter or powdered sugar, I need to go to a different store.
3. The cashiers sit.
4. You have to put money in for a cart and you bring your own bags (or pay for one at the cash register)
5. The workers work the opening hours, so they are busy stocking while you are trying to shop (highly frustrating!)
6. Opening hours are too short IMHO. Most are 9-6:30. Some vary and open at 8:30 and are open later on Fridays. Most are closed on Sundays, but a few are open 9-12 and then closed Monday mornings.
Interesting, reminds me of our Aldi...which I think is a German company.

Yay!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like UK stores are similar to, but also different from, Belgian and US stores. I may just have to write a blog of my own.
