Belgian Snowy Sidewalks

Het sneeuwvrij maken van de voetpaden is een wettelijke verplichting in België van de burger. U bent dus zelf verantwoordelijk voor het sneeuwvrij maken van de stoep voor uw woning. Doet u dit niet dan riskeert u een boete tot € 250.

This translated says that "Clearing the the snow from your sidewalk is a legal obligation. You are self responsible to do this for your house. If you don't, you risk a €250 ticket."

I always laugh when it snows here, but I guess when we own a house, we will do the same. It is freezing cold, windy, snowy and people are out cleaning their sidewalk. The sidewalks were so clear 2 days ago, it was not even possible to pull a sled on them! 

If you drive early in the morning you see people not only shoveling the snow, but SWEEPING the little pieces out of the cracks and then, very responsibly, putting salt or sand down.

  

Wie is aansprakelijk voor een glijpartij?

”De bewijslast daarvoor ligt bij het slachtoffer. Die moet kunnen aantonen dat hij of zij is gevallen doordat de bewoner nalatig is geweest bij het vegen van de stoep. Als dat wordt bewezen, dan zal de familiale verzekering van die bewoner of instelling de schade vergoeden.

   

Who is liable if someone falls?
"The burden of proof lies with the victim. They must prove that he or she fell because the occupant was negligent when sweeping the sidewalk. If that is proven, then the insurance of the occupant will any damage.
