Sinterklaas revisited...

Here is  what I posted 3 years ago: http://missamericamisterbelgium.blogspot.be/2009/12/i-am-not-good-belgian-sinterklaas.html

I was correct in my observations that this holiday is BIG. Last year I attended the Sinterklaas program at the school of my nieces and nephews. The photo you see was the Sint and Zwarte Pieten who were there. A friend took a photo of the poster. If you click the photo, you can see more of her beautiful photos.

The children receive a bag of goodies from the Sint. It normally has a big chocolate figure, an orange, letter cookies and these other little cookies with an icing drop.

Supposedly you are supposed to put your shoe out on the 5th with a carrot for his horse. I saw them selling GIANT carrots at the grocery store, special for this holiday.
I have said before that this holiday would never fly in America because of the 'black' servants. Allegedly they say they are black because they go through the chimney, but other sources say differently. Others also say that they aren't really slaves or servants, but just normal helpers. This year it is in the news of how people find it racist. Here is an English article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324640104578161254142769678.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

And a bloggy friend posted about it in German.
